I wanted to make a tutorial on how do my folder sorting, although time continues to escape me. Here's a quick overview:
The "root" folders (the folders that are located in the content directory), I give a four digital number (with number padding - "1" is "0001") as the prefix to the folder name. Folders with a lower number will appear first in the list.
For example:
0001_FolderABC
0010_FolderPurple
Based on old programming techniques, I usually leave gaps in the numbering so I can add additional folders between folders in the future. So in the above example I could put 0005_FolderGreen in between without having to rename everything
For sub-folders I use one of three techniques.
The first is just use the default sorting (which is alphabetical). This works best for the names of people, events, years or locations.
The second is the same sorting used as the root folders. This is good when I want to folders to be listed in an order that I want to define.
The third is based on date and uses almost the same format as above. Instead of using a number "0010" I use the date "0328" for March 28th. So if I wanted to post pictures from my birthday, I would use the folder name "0328_BirthdayJosh". I have subfolders for each year which is why I don't include the year in the prefix, although you could if you needed to (20090328_BirthdayJosh).
When using this method make sure to change the title of each folder from within the admin section. Also, I try my best to avoid using spaces in the folder names as I personally can't stand seeing %20 in the URL.
Hopefully this helps someone! Maybe it will become a sticky
