I would like to play around with how the menu items look. When selecting an item there is a background, I would like to change that.[attachment=0]Screen Shot 2017-12-30 at 8.03.39 PM.png[/attachment] See the black are backing "home". By the time you read this the site will have changed.

This can only be modified by applying custom CSS styles (settings > custom > custom CSS).
On a related note, I think you should be using a semi-transparent menu style on your index page gallery slideshow intro settings. No background (normal) doesn't work unless the selected intro photos are VERY subtle (like on this website), allowing the menu to shine through. I think you should solve this before making any plans to customize the menu further.
